Team 3: 21st Century Literacy


Focus: How can we enhance student achievement in reading and writing through technology, including digital storytelling?

Updated 2/21: How can we promote 21st Century Learning skills and CONNECTED learning, as well as reading and writing, through the use of digital storytelling?

Rationale: We want to find engaging ways to
- Increase motivation
- Develop reading and writing skills ("Writers inspired by..."/ Authors as mentors)
- Provide 21st Century CONNECTED learning opportunities (i.e., communication, global audience, creativity, collaboration, addressing different learning styles, characteristics of successful learners ("habits of mind"))
- Increase technology skills

Questions:
  • How will the use of technology affect student achievement in reading and writing?
  • What does research say about the use of technology in developing literacy?
  • What steps are involved in the implementation of digital storytelling?
    • What materials do we need to successfully implement the steps?
  • What other approaches besides digital storytelling might we use to enhance literacy?
  • Can we incorporate collaboration among students with digital storytelling and/or other technologies?
  • What will we learn about student motivation from the use of digital storytelling in reading/writing instruction?

Notes 2/21:
  • Use response clickers to collect data at the end? Use these questions for discussion:
    • Opinions on Sock Puppets, One Smile, future suggestions? Collaboration?
    • If we used Sock Puppets again, what might we do differently? What could be better? Did anything frustrate you?
    • Is there anything you would want to do differently to make the One Smile project better?
    • What would you want to use Sock Puppets for?
    • If you had the chance to tape your joke again, what would you do differently?
    • What is your favorite way to tell a story? (paper, laptop, iPad, etc.)
    • Do you think repeated practice made your reading better?
